The element is Iodine and its number is 53. Iodine is found in seawater and kelp that has absorbed the water. It can be found in other places but the most important place is the ocean.
In 1811 Bernard Courtois discovered it. What is interesting is that he was not looking for a way to heal a person, which is one thing that iodine can do, but he was looking for a way to kill them. This was during the time of Napoleon and they were in need of more gunpowder. While running scarce on one component of gunpowder, someone had suggested that the use seaweed that has been burnt to ash as a substitute. While Bernard was making gunpowder, he discovered when he added certain other elements to the ash, it would turn to a purple vapor and stick to metal and make crystals.
For my plate I have a fish, a filmstrip and kelp. The fish is there solely to represent that it was underwater. Also in the corner there is a small filmstrip. Iodine can also be mixed with silver to create dyes for film. To create the plate I traced the picture of the fish, kelp, and film onto the piece of linoleum backwards. After I traced it I carved out what would be negative space. Then I put paint on it and printed in on a sheet of paper.
I liked being able to come up with my own idea for the print besides having the teacher tell me what to make. However next time I would have wanted to have more time to plan out what I wanted to have on my plate. It was a problem on my behalf though. I had rushed myself to finish the draft of the picture so that I would not fall behind.
